Doris Faye (Black) Calvert

Doris Faye (Black) Calvert
September 2, 1930 ~ May 21, 2023

Doris Faye (Black) Calvert was born on September 2, 1930 at Noble, Oklahoma to James Herbert (Bert) Black and Pearl Bunch Black. She had one sister, Mary Louise (Black) Robertson, and two brothers, James (Jimmy) Edward Black, and Jerry Wayne Black.

Doris was married to Virgle Truly Calvert on July 3, 1948 at Lexington, Oklahoma. She graduated from Noble High School in May of 1948. She was valedictorian of her senior class. She completed business school in Oklahoma City after she was married. To this union were born three sons: Bobby Don Calvert, Larry Gene Calvert, and David Wayne Calvert.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bert Black and Pearl Black; her husband, Virgle Calvert; and her daughter-in-law, Karla Calvert.

She leaves behind to mourn her passing three sons, Bobby Don Calvert (and wife Karen) of Lakeville, Massachusetts, Larry Gene Calvert (and wife Diann) of Oilton, Oklahoma, and David Wayne Calvert (and wife Diana) of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; her sister, Mary Lou Robertson of Norman, Oklahoma; her brothers, James (Jimmy) Black and his wife Nelda, of Norman, Oklahoma, and Jerry Black and his wife Susan, of Moore, Oklahoma; eight granddaughters, Tiffany Dawn Wilson of Owasso, Oklahoma, Terra Lynn Hills and husband Mike of Seekonk, Massachusetts, Carissa Dawn Anderson and husband Steven of Seneca, South Carolina, Courtney Lynn Stiles and husband Ryan of Moore, Oklahoma, Chelsea Alane Brown and husband Stephen, of Oktaha, Oklahoma, Vanessa Irene Snyder and husband Kayle, of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, Madison Elizabeth Calvert of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Alexandra (Ally) Nicole Thi Calvert of Pawtucket, Rhode Island; one grandson, Justin Carlton Calvert and wife Whitney of Muskogee, Oklahoma; and 13 great-grandchildren. She also had one son "by choice" - Bill Edmondson and wife Linda, of Noble, Oklahoma, and three daughters "by choice", Cyndi Eckley and husband Gordon of Bishopville, South Carolina, Kathy Dorl of Sanger, Texas, and Karen McCombs and husband Edward of Glencoe, Oklahoma.

Doris was trained as a bookkeeper, and had several bookkeeping jobs, including serving as the head bookkeeper at the Stillwater Regional Medical Center for many years. She also worked in the trust department at First National Bank in Stillwater for several years. Her favorite role, however, was serving as a pastor's wife, alongside her husband, Virgle, for almost 40 years. In that role, she taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, sang in the choir, played the piano, served as a sponsor and a cook at Falls Creek and at children's camp, and was a prayer partner and encourager to hundreds of people over the years. She also was able to go on a mission trip to the Philippines with her husband.

Doris was known by her 9 grandkids and great grandkids as grandma. That was probably her favorite role. She loved spoiling all of her grandkids and great-grandkids, and lots of other children in the churches where they served. She made the best chocolate chip cookies on the planet, and at Christmas she would make close to a hundred rolls of cookie dough that she would give to her kids, grandkids, church staff, and other family and friends. She loved having all of her family in her home for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Most of all, she loved Jesus with all of her heart. She became a Christian at age 9 and was baptized the same day she accepted Christ. She played the piano at church as a teenager and served in church all of her life. She would read the Bible through every year, and prayed for all of her family by name every day until the dementia made that impossible.

Doris was dearly loved and will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
