KUBAT, CHARLES 1931-2002
Brother Charles was born on July 15th, 1931 in Okeene, Blaine County, Oklahoma, the son of James and Cyriaca Kubat. Charles passed away on September 13th, 2002. Charles had a brother Larry. When Charles was just four years old, their father died. His mother then married Alexander Thurman and a "blended family" began. The two boys immediately gained three sisters, Madeline, Ilene and Pylo, and a brother Richard. Other children would later be born into this family, two boys, Michael and Marvin and one girl, Dolores. Charles graduated from St.Mary's Grade school in Okeene and St. Gregory's High School in Shawnee, Oklahoma. He attended Central State Teachers College in Edmond, Oklahoma, as well as Wichita University in Kansas. In 1984 he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Management at Silver Lake College in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. In those earlier college years he became interested in religious life and the ministry of the Brother. He entered the Society of the Devine Savior (Salvatorians) as a Candidate in 1952 at St. Nazianz, Wisconsin. He spent his novitiate year in Menominee, Michigan making his first profession in March 1954. For ten years, he worked in maintenance at Jordan Seminary in Menominee, Michigan, Divine Savior Seminary in Lanham, Maryland, and Mother of the Savior Seminary in Blackwood, New Jersey. In 1964, he was called to the missionary activity of the Salvatorians in Masasi , Tanzania. His love for the missions would keep him there until 1980, fulfilling such tasks as diocesan treasurer, maintenance work, and teaching manual skills in the technical school. He returned to the United States in 1980, working for the next five years in maintenance at St. Nazianz, Wisconsin while completing his college studies in nearby Manitowoc. From 1985 to 1990 he lived and worked at Sacred Heart Parish in Knoxville, Tennessee, serving as plant manager and computer class instructor. A near fatal auto accident forced him to leave the parish and to spend the next several months in physical rehabilitation in Nashville, Tennessee. Returning to Wisconsin following his physical therapy, Brother Charles took courses in philosophy and theology in Hales Corners, Wisconsin, and worked with the retired members of the Society at Jordan House. Brother Charles is survived by his half-brothers Michael and Marvin Thurman, his half-sister Dolores Winter, and sister-in-law Melba Kubat. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Larry, his step-father, his step-sisters Madeline Metz, Ilene Farhar, and Pylo Brown, and his step-brother Richard Thurman.
