GEORGE, DELBERT 1910-2002
Delbert Earnest George was born December 14, 1910 at Marian, Kansas to Samuel and Lydia Meier George and passed away Saturday, February 16, 2002 at the age of 91. Delbert grew up southwest of Okeene on a farm. He attended area schools and graduated from a consolidated school in the Homestead area. He attended Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska and received his degree from North Western Oklahoma State University in math and science. Delbert did post graduate work at Oklahoma State University and the University of New Mexico. He taught school for seven years in several area schools and in New Mexico. In 1940, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, where he learned and studied meteorology. After an honorable discharge, he went to work for the U.S. Weather Bureau in Kansas City as a liaison officer. After two years, he was assigned to head the new Weather Bureau office in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he remained for 28 years until his retirement in 1973. In 1974, Delbert became a resident of the Watonga community. He could fix anything and was very inventive. He was a teacher, a coach, and an avid investor. He was married to Maxine Knoles at Kansas City, Missouri on April 24, 1947. His parents and one sister preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife Maxine of the home in Watonga; one son Sam George and wife Mary Lou of Harrah, Oklahoma; one granddaughter, Susan Newman and husband Tommy of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; one grandson Ethan George of Harrah, Oklahoma; as well as numerous other relatives and friends. Funeral services for Delbert George was held at the graveside at Roselawn Cemetery in Okeene, Wednesday, February 20, 2002 at 10:30 A.M. with Rev. Rob Harris officiating. Arrangements were by Wilkinson Mortuary of Watonga, Oklahoma. Memorial contributions may be made to the Watonga Hospital Fund or the Watonga Methodist Church.
