FELDER, PEARL (WELLS) 1916-2002
Services for Pearl Felder will be on July 10th, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. in the United Methodist Church in Canton, Oklahoma with Reverend Kenneth Smith officiating. Internment will be in the Canton Cemetery. Pearl Felder was born on March 19th, 1916 in Fonda, Oklahoma to Pearl Risdon and Carried Ethel (Cochran) Wells. She was named Iona Pearl in honor of her father, and was always known as Pearl to her family and friends. Pearl grew up and attended school in Fonda, Oklahoma; a town-gone-by located between Canton and Seiling, Oklahoma, graduated from high school in Seiling and attended business school in Wichita, Kansas. Pearl married Lawrence Joseph "Bub" Felder on July 23rd, 1938. They settled in Canton in a rental house north of the old school house while their home on West Cedar was being built. Their son Larry Joe was born in their home on Cedar on December 11th, 1940. Not long after the birth of their son, Bub left for San Antonio, Texas to work as an aviation mechanic for the war effort. Pearl followed with Larry shortly after and set up their home near Kelly Air Force Base (now Lackland). As the war progressed, they moved to Oklahoma City to live while Bub worked at Tinker Air Force Base until the end of World War II. They returned to their home in Canton, from where they never again ventured except for their frequent trips to visit family. Their dark haired, dark eyed angel was born after their return to Canton. Linda Kay was born July 23rd, 1947, on their wedding anniversary. While many women had an inherent need to rearrange furniture, Pearl seemed to have a need to rearrange walls, which she did many times during the next fifty plus years. Bub never knew what to expect or where doors would lead when he came home from work. When Pearl wasn't remodeling, she worked beside Bub in the garage. She did the billing and kept the books but was always there to clean and grease bearings and provide whatever other help she could. In addition to helping Bub in the garage, Pearl worked for Erma's Grocery and J & E Grocery, helping provide college educations for Larry and Linda. In 1965, Pearl and Bub built a laundry and garage on West Main in Canton, Oklahoma. By now both Pearl and Bub were tired of the hard work of an auto mechanic so the new garage saw very little auto grease or motor oil. Soon all of that open space played on Pearl's mind so in less than a year, it was converted to a donut shop that kept them really busy from 4:00 a.m. to mid morning. To fill the rest of the morning, they soon started selling hot sandwiches, which quickly turned into full hot meals served family style. Bub preceded Pearl in death by ten years. She is survived by her son, Larry and his wife Judy of Scottsdale, Arizona; her daughter, Linda Griggs and her husband Walter of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; one brother Dal Wells and his wife Marj of Kingman, Kansas and Bub's sister, Mary Francis Albertson of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Pearl has two grandsons; James of Cleveland, Ohio and Michael and his wife Deborah of Salem, Oregon and two granddaughters; Teresa of Phoenix, Arizona and Ginger Gryder and husband Jordy of Luther, Oklahoma. Pearl is survived by twelve great grandchildren and many nieces, grand nieces, nephews, and grand nephews. As survivors, we find comfort in knowing there is a celebration of people, waiting to greet her. Among this welcoming committee will be Bub, Carrie, and Riz (her mama and daddy), "Mr. & Mrs." Felder (Bub's father and mother) and Agnes (Bub's sister), to who Pearl provided unselfish years of personal care.
