Alva – Amelia M. Hughes, 101, passed away at a local nursing home yesterday. Hughes was born October 19, 1881 in Bookau, Germany. She came to the U. S. as a child and worked as a dressmaker.
She was preceded in death by three sisters: Martha Rother, Gertrude Birkholz, Emily Jones, one brother, Ralph Hempel and a half - brother, Carl Hempel of Puyallup, Washington. Graveside services will be at 3 PM Monday at the Ryn Township Cemetery in Milan, Kansas, under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Chapel with Rev. Carl Hawkins of the Alva Church of God officiating.
