Murl Car Harris was born January 31, 1932 to Frank Harris and Thelma Mahurin in Cole, Oklahoma. As a child, he lived on his grandparent’s farm and worked hard to contribute to the household. He joined the United States Army in 1951, traveling to Korea and back over the next several years.
He married his wife of 57 years, Wanda Lee Wright, on July 15, 1962. They had three children, Delona (Harris) Archer, Weldon “Shorty” Harris, and Wendell Harris. Murl was actively involved in his children’s school, participating in the Bethany band boosters with many Indian Taco dinner fundraisers.
Those who knew Murl admired him for his sense of humor, wit, and love of family and friends. He and his wife took in many family members over the years in times of transition. He enjoyed working on cars and taught many young men how to maintain their vehicles. He had many jobs throughout this life, working at filling stations, an asbestos warehouse, and finishing his career as head custodian with the Council Grove School District.
Murl passed away peacefully in the California home of his daughter on Sunday, January 26, 2025. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Wanda; his sons, Wendell and Shorty; his brothers, Wesley and Curtis; and his sisters, Lena Mae and Pauline. Murl is survived by his daughter, Delona; daughters-in-law, Jackie Harris and Teresa Harris Edwards; nine grandchildren and their spouses; ten great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
The family would like to thank the amazing team at American River Hospice and Help at Home for their care of Murl in the last 5 months.
Funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at the Eisenhour Funeral Home Chapel in Blanchard. Burial will follow in the Blanchard Cemetery.
