Pryor Adkins Obit

April 15, 1840 - November 28, 1918

Submillted by: Matt

Was One of the Oldest and Most Popular Citizens of Norman; First Mayor

Many warm and personal friends deeply regret to hear of the death of Mr. Pryor Adkins, which took place at the home of his son, Mr. Arthur Adkins, on the Adkins ranch, in McClain county, on Thanksgiving morning, November 28, 1918, at 2 o'clock after an illness of some months with dropsy.

He was in the 79th year of his age, - years full of activity, of earnest endeavor and of love and friendship for his fellow man.

Mr. Adkins was one of the real old citizens of this community, having resided in the Chickasaw country long before the opening of Oklahoma. At the opening he came to Norman where for years e was one of its leading business men, and was the first mayor of the city, away back in 1889. He was a great-hearted, great souled gentleman, whose hand was ever open to the needy, and perhaps few men had more warm and enduring friends. Notwithstanding his age, he has been extremely active until his last sickness.

He leaves three sons, C.D., John and Arthur Adkins, and a host of grandchildren to mourn his demise, who have the earnest sympathy of thousands of friends.

The funeral was held at the ranch at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon, services being conducted at the grave by Norman Lodge No. 38 A.F. & A.M. Burial was made in the Adkins family cemetery.
