Billy Joe "Bill" Whiteside
January 9, 1936 - April 22, 2026
Services to remember and celebrate the life of Billy Joe "Bill" Whiteside will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at Pleasant Hope Baptist Church in Adair, OK. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday at the funeral home from 3-7 with family there to receive visitors from 5-7. Bill went home to Heaven on April 22, 2026, at his home surrounded by his family. He was 90 years old.
Born January 9, 1936, in Rogers County near Cherokee Central, to William Albert and Dorothy (Ballard) Whiteside. Bill was raised and educated in Rogers County and attended Foyil, Winganon, and Chelsea Public Schools. During his school days Bill played football, basketball, and baseball. He was also a member of the FFA Club. On October 11, 1958, at the Winganon Baptist Church Bill married the help mate God had prepared for him Ynema Smith. Their marriage was gifted with 3 sons Mark, Kevin, and Todd. Bill faithfully served his country in the United States Army and began his first tour of duty just 14 days after his wedding in Fort Bragg North Carolina. In November of 1962 his second tour of duty began in Fort Polk, Louisiana. Bill provided for his family as a heavy equipment operator. He worked for Peabody Coal Company where he retired after more than 23 years. Bill was a member of the United Mine Workers of America.
A man that was just a very plain, simple Cowboy and rode his horses almost every day, until his health began to change. He raised horses, cattle, and various other farm animals. He was known around the area for his custom hay baling. Bill and Ynema would spend many a day in the hay field with Bill on the baler and Ynema on the rake. When free time did present itself Bill and Ynema enjoyed camping at Spencer Creek. That time of camping usually lasted from April till October, and their campsite was at the spot where Bill was born. He and Ynema did a little traveling as well and got to see several states as well as Canada. When grandchildren came along Bill excelled at being a "Papa" just as he had as a father. He had a unique relationship with each of them. A true family man at heart, Bill looked forward to the Sunday dinners after church. It might be said it wasn't about eating but that he knew as many of his family would be there as could. According to his family, Bill liked to tease them. What started with his children, and then again with his grandchildren, was just Bill's way of showing them how much they were loved.
A man who has left an example and legacy of how to be a husband, father, grandfather and friend. Bill is survived by his wife of over 67 years Ynema Whiteside, children, Kevin Whiteside and wife Patty, Todd Whiteside and wife Kim, grandchildren, Rebecca Metcalf and husband Richard, Kim Welch and husband Josh, Markie Phillips and husband Wilson, Trina Butler and wife Karissa, Tera Masterson and husband DJ, Billy Whiteside, Libby Whiteside, Sophia Whiteside, and Toddy Whiteside, great grandchildren, Lane and Tuff Metcalf, Avy and Addie Welch, Taylor Phillips, Sy Owens, Mylee Aylward, Brylee Thouvenel, and Baby Masterson due in May, his son Mark's wife Debbie Whiteside and numerous, nieces, nephews and extended family. Bill was preceded in death by his son, Mark Whiteside, parents, William and Dorothy Whiteside, mother and father-in-law, Roy "Dutch" and Marie Smith.
