Darlene Joe Smith
January 3, 1938 - September 5, 2026
Darlene Joe Smith was born on January 3rd 1938, and departed this earth on September 5, 2026, at the age of 88 years, 8 months and 4 days. Darlene was the second daughter of Paul Reynolds Maggard and Clarice Yardley Maggard. She was born in Woodward, Oklahoma. The family lived on a farm near Quinlan where she attended school, graduating in 1956. She married LD Smith shortly after graduation. They were married 55 years at the time of his death in 2012.
She and LD lived in several areas of Oklahoma and Kansas following his job opportunities. Much of their early years were spent in Mooreland and Woodward before moving to Garden City, Kansas, before returning to work in Oklahoma where he worked supporting the equipment building Kaw Dam. In 1962, the family moved to Pryor, where she lived at the time of her death.
Darlene was a homemaker who dedicated her time to raising their four boys. She was a talented artist who loved to draw, paint and create beauty around her. After her boys were grown, she attended Rogers State College and took some art classes to hone in her skills.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, LD; her parents, Paul and Clarice Maggard; brother, Keith Maggard; and sister, Glenda Mullins.
Darlene is survived by her four children: Tracy and wife Donna of Pryor, Monte and wife Shawn of Kansas City, KS, Jeffery of Sallisaw, OK, Joseph and wife Gina of Claremore, OK; sister, Pauline (Charles) Hogue; and brother, Rick Maggard both of Woodward, OK. She was also the proud grandmother to ten grandchildren: Brandy Hair (Josh) of Tulsa, OK, Matthew Smith (Kaimi) of Enid, OK, Tye Silverthorn (Phillip) of Tulsa, OK, Jenna Caudle of Sallisaw, OK, Taylor Smith (Lauren) of Olathe KS, Jacob Smith (Katarina) of Inola, OK, Joey Smith (Ashley) of Pryor, Spencer Smith (Cayenne) of Catoosa, OK, Dr Quincey Fort (Tristan) of Springfield, MO, and Colin Ward (Chelsea) of Tulsa, OK. She is also survived by twenty-six great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
Of course, no obituary could truly capture her life without sharing a few of the stories that made her uniquely and sometimes hilariously-herself. Darlene was an avid collector and organizer. She had a talent for collecting unique things, such as straws, ink-pens, paper clips and rubber bands. When she asked for an ink pen, Joe took her 100 of the same color ink pens just so she could add to her collection. She was even known to take the unused straws at the restaurants. She organized these and other things in clear boxes which were carefully labeled with the contents. She also had a love for scrapbooking and researching genealogy.
As the boys were growing up, she loved to prank them and their friends. It was a known fact to stay away from the kitchen window if you were outside or she would douse you with a pan of dishwater. When the boys started riding motorcycles, they knew not to leave their helmets unattended or she would fill them up with day old spaghetti. Nothing was safe around her; she once put a very large women's bra on the back of Monte's car hanging from the trunk and he unknowingly drove to Tulsa with the lingerie handing out the back. Using her artistic talent, she once sprayed painted a cow patty and put a rose in it, and sent it to her brother-in-law Delbert. Even LD wasn't safe around her, after a long hard day, he would come home and take a shower then nap on the couch. Many times, he would awaken to find out she had marked all over his body and had fresh new tattoos, artistically and lovingly drawn by her.
Even in her older years, you found it hard to trust an answer she gave you, because she was usually being sarcastic about something. Even with her healthcare providers, they didn't know what to think and not knowing if she was being serious or not.
We will miss her presence, her personality and of all the things that made her uniquely herself. But we know that every time one of these familiar stories is told and someone around the table begins to laugh, a little piece of her will be right there with us.
