Aletha Carolyn Courtney
March 6, 1939 - May 7, 2026
On the evening of May 7, 2026, at approximately 9:30 p.m., our beloved mother and grandmother passed peacefully in her sleep at home on the family farm she so dearly loved, she was 87.
Aletha Carolyn Courtney was born on March 6, 1939 to Homer Lee and Edith (Huff) Metzger in Winfield, Kansas.
Born upon the wind-swept plains of Kansas, she was raised with the quiet strength and steady resilience that would define her entire life. While working in Wichita, our grandfather was introduced to her on a blind date, beginning a marriage and partnership that would endure fourty-nine years and eleven months. Together they returned home to the family farm between Pryor and Chouteau, in the southwestern Cooweescoowee, where they built a life centered around faith, family, hard work, and community.
She was the proud mother of six children, grandmother of eight, and great-grandmother of eight. Though soft-spoken by nature, her presence was constant and deeply felt, in a kitchen where mashed potatoes and gravy were never far from the table and pie was always close behind, in the quiet rhythm of ranch life, and in the steadfast care she gave to everyone around her. She continued actively working on the ranch until 86 years of age and maintained her independence until her final week.
Her mind remained sharp and welcoming until the very end, gladly receiving visits from family, friends, and neighbors right up until the day she passed. One of her greatest worries in life was "being a bother." She never wished to be fussed over or put anyone out, yet the kindness and love shown by our small community in her final days touched her deeply and reminded all of us how greatly she was cherished.
She passed peacefully, surrounded by family, leaving behind a legacy not built on loud words or grand displays, but on quiet devotion, humility, perseverance, and love. The fields she worked, the meals she prepared, and the family she nurtured stand as lasting testimony to a life well and faithfully lived.
We had searched for Yellow Cockscomb for an age and thankfully we had one bloom before she passed.
She is survived by her five children; Athena Harrison and husband John of Sand Springs, Mike Courtney and wife Anita of Pryor, Tim Courtney and wife Nora of Chouteau, Brian Courtney and wife Kim of Pryor and Melinda Fruendt and husband Paul of Guthrie; eight grandchildren, Amy, Heath, Cheyenne, Dakota, Logan, Autumn, Brock and Madison and eight great grandchildren, Karsten, Bryce, Briley, Zofia, Susan, Harper, Ainsley and Chisholm.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Homer and Edith; her husband of forty-nine years, John; her infant son, John Francis Courtney Jr. and two sisters.
