Leon Robert "Lonnie Bob" Major was born in Enid, Oklahoma on November 23, 1951 to parents, Willie and Lynette Major. His dad worked as a lineman on construction for OG&E, and the family moved all around Oklahoma, living briefly in Ft. Smith, Arkansas, before again settling down in Enid, where Leon attended school until his junior year. He loved football and played from third grade until graduating from high school. He and his family moved to Ringwood for his junior and senior years.

After graduating high school, Leon joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in Chiang Mai, Thailand and later in El Paso, Texas.

After leaving the U.S. Army he went to college at Northwestern in Alva, where he graduated. He then attended college at OSU in Stillwater for two years. He took a job at Gold Spot Dairy as a milkman where he met and later married his wife, Joy. Shortly after their marriage, Leon went to work for OSU Grounds Department. The couple remained in Stillwater their entire thirty-eight years of married life.

Leon loved sports, wargaming, and playing Strat-O-Matic Baseball with his buddies. He was a huge Boston Red Sox fan. He loved God and his family. He liked to spoil his dogs, which he loved dearly. He was an avid reader and loved books about history, sports, and mountain climbing. He had a quick wit, great sense of humor, and loved to laugh. He tried to live life as free, easy, and uncomplicated as possible.
