September 4, 1921 - December 15, 2021

Funeral services for Herbert Roy "Herb" Nickel, 100, of Fairview, OK, will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, December 21, at the Mennonite Brethren Church, Fairview, OK, with Pastor Travis Schimdt officiating. Interment will follow in the North M.B. Cemetery under the direction of Pierce Funeral Home, Fairview. The family will be present to greet friends from 6-8 on Monday evening at the funeral home.

Herb was born September 4, 1921, in rural Orienta, OK, to Pete and Susanna "Susie" (Wichert) Nickel. He was one of 8 children. He peacefully departed to his heavenly home on Wednesday, December 15, 2021, surrounded by his loving family at Fairview.

Herb attended a country school northwest of Fairview. One day while walking on Main Street in Fairview, Rosa Mae Fitzhugh caught the eye of this farm boy from Orienta. They were married on April 14, 1946, at the Fairview North Mennonite Brethren Church. As newlyweds they lived out west of Orienta near the Gloss Mountains. Seven years later they moved into a small house behind the Orienta store, which they began operating. Herb served as postmaster within the store for 27 years. They later moved and resided in Ringwood for 32 years. They had 72 wonderful years and five children together.

He was awarded a Bronze Star for his service in the U.S. Army Corps during WWII and enjoyed living in London and traveling with the military. Decorations and Citations received: Good Conduct, WWII Victory Medal, American Theater Campaign, and EAMS Campaign with 4 bronze stars.

He was a member of the Fairview Mennonite Brethren Church, the Ringwood Lions Club and the American Legion Post of Ames, OK. Serving God, fishing for catfish, tending cattle, playing music with his band and family get-togethers are what he loved doing! His wife, Rosa was always supportive of his love of music and accompanied him many years as he and his band played music at churches, nursing homes and events around northwest Oklahoma.

Herb was preceded in death by his wife Rosa; brothers Bennie Nickel and Alferd Nickel; and sisters LaVerne Fast and Marjorie Brewton.

He is survived by sons Richard Nickel and wife Sally, Dwayne Nickel and wife Lourdes and Lyle Nickel and wife Cheryl; daughters Connie Miller and husband Rod and Kim Pierce and husband David; grandchildren Robert Nickel, Kevin Nickel, Shelly Furlong and husband Corey, Mark Nickel and wife Robin, Jeremy Nickel, Stephanie Hatfield and husband Shawn, Cassie Evans and husband Ron, Brian Nickel and wife Megan, Mike Patredis and wife Hannah, Kyle Miller and Levi Miller, Tory Pierce, Wade Pierce and Justin Pierce; great-grandchildren Natalie Nickel, Seth Nickel, Peyton Nickel, Zach Furlong, Holland Furlong, Grayson Furlong, Dakota Furlong, Austin Baker, Dillon Baker, Kylyn Nickel, Karsyn Nickel, Kynsler Nickel, Jona Nickel, Jade Nickel, Jackson Nickel, Tatum Hatfield, Piper Hatfield, Wyatt Evans, Chase Nickel, Brady Nickel, Taylor Patredis and Rian Patredis; sister Ruby Becker and husband Lynford; and brothers Eldon Nickel and wife Carol and Dean Nickel and wife Joyce.
