Donald Wade “Don” Icke, 86, long-time civic leader and insurance representative passed away on February 12, 2013 in Fairview, OK. Born to John and Velma (Bixler) Icke on August 23, 1926 in Fair Valley, OK (Woods county). He attended and graduated from Waynoka High School, where he enjoyed playing football and met his wife of 63 years, Leona Lea Jones.

Don served as a corporal in the U.S. Army in Europe during the final months of World War II. He returned to Oklahoma where he and Leona started a family and entered the business world as a partner in a Conoco gas station franchise, and Leona worked as a nurse at the Waynoka Hospital. They were approved by the state to be foster parents which granted them a boy, George Robert Criswell, age 9, their lives continued to grow with the birth of Greg W. Icke in 1954 and Ronda J. Icke in 1957.

Donald was told of a GREAT business for young families to invest and work in, this was turkey farming, where the whole family could work together at home. It turned out the turkey business was for turkeys. During this time, Donald was also selling feed to elevators and farmers, which took him away from the family and farm. This was difficult on him and the family. The Icke's got out of the turkey farming business. With Leona at home raising a family along with turkeys, she heard of another selling job that would allow Donald to be at home with her and the children. This profession was selling life insurance. He obtained his license and opened an office in Waynoka. It wasn't long before Don started looking to buy an established insurance company in a larger town when he was informed of an agency located in Fairview, OK.

Living in Fairview brought out the community leader Don had deep inside. He joined the Lions Club, the Chamber of Commerce, and was elected to the City Council. He also served as our Mayor. Have you ever wondered why Eighth and Ninth Avenues are one way? Yes, Don Icke. After 35 years of work and public service, Don “retired” in 1998 but continued to serve on the Fairview Hospital Board for several years. Don also helped at the Major County Fair, training young people how to prepare animals for shows and exhibits. He always enjoyed helping children and spent countless hours repairing and restoring bicycles that he would then donate to local charities.

Don was preceded in death by his wife, Leona, and one grandchild, Christa Lea Icke.

He is survived by one brother, Dale Icke and wife Barbara living in Waynoka; his two children, Greg and wife Kim Icke, along with Jarod Wade Icke and Tia Nicole Icke of Fairview, Stacy Lynn (Icke) Whitworth and her husband Izack Whitworth of Savannah, GA; Ronda (Icke) Kendrick and her husband Karl Kendrick and their two children, Matthew Reid and April Anne of Fairview;

Don had lots of friends and associates across America and we all shall miss him dearly.

Memorials may be made to the Fairview Hospital Foundation with Pierce Funeral Home serving as custodian at P.O. Box 15, Fairview, OK 73737.

Condolences may be made online at www.haiglerpierce.com. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 16, 2013 at the First United Methodist Church of Fairview with Minister Ray Rose officiating.
