March 1, 1963 - September 16, 2021

The funeral service for Sonya Summers Tyau, 58-year-old former Ames resident, is 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 24, 2021, in the Henninger-Hinson Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Ames Cemetery. Reverend Paul Barber will officiate. Visitation with family will be Thursday evening from 5-7 in the funeral home chapel.

Sonya Summers Tyau was born on March 1, 1963, to Stanley and Jtonne Summers in Enid, Oklahoma. She graduated from Ames High School and went on to study design at the Bauder Fashion College in Dallas, Texas. She was the third daughter in the Summers family and was a real tomboy when she was little, but that changed and she found the love for design. She started a small design business in her parents' basement, taking her designs to the Dallas Market Center. She also worked for Chase as a loan account manager.

She taught many classes of her trade throughout her lifetime and was loved by all her students. She fought acute myloid leukemia for five years and received two stem cell transplants from her sister Karla. She passed peacefully in her sleep on September 16, 2021.

Sonya is survived by her daughter Tani, of Lewisville, TX; son, Payne, of Dallas, TX (Caitlin); her mother and two sisters, Kim McCoy (Jim) and Karla Creason (Ron). She was preceded in death by her father, Stanley Summers, and sister, Jo Summers.

Donations may be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, PO Box 22324, New York, NY 10087, or the Ames Cemetery, PO Box 521, Ames, OK 73718.
