ENID — Wilma Birdene Odell Schoonover went to be with her Lord Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011.

Birdene was born May 3, 1914, in Reece, Kan., to Ernest and Goldie Miles. Her family moved to Oklahoma in 1920. She was baptized on July 3, 1927, in Captain John's Pond by Rev. Stacy, beginning her membership at Ames Christian Church. She attended Ames Public School and graduated salutatorian and football queen of the 1933 senior class.

She married Oscar Nelson Odell April 28, 1934, in a ceremony performed by Pastor Kent Dale at his Enid, Okla., home . They resided in Ames and were both very active at Ames Christian Church. Together, they organized and conducted the Easter Sunrise Service for many years. Birdene also taught Cradle Roll and sang in the choir and CWF Ladies Circle. They had four children, Conrad, Shelby, Beverly Ann and Biddy. Oscar passed away Sept. 3, 1953, after a long illness with cancer.

Birdene later married E. Leroy Schoonover on Dec. 29, 1965, in Fort Worth, Texas. They resided on the Schoonover family farm in Ames. As a hobby, they tended a peach orchard bringing together family and friends to share in the fruit. Leroy was a very successful salesman for Texas Refinery Corporation. Birdene accompanied him on sales calls, company meetings and other travels. After Leroy passed away April 27, 1983, Birdene took over selling for Texas Refinery. She retired after receiving her 25 year pin in May 2008 as a member of the million-dollar club.

Birdene moved to Enid, where she met new friends and enjoyed hosting and attending weekly card games. She became an active member of Central Christian Church in the Sooner Class, Ladies Guild and Caregivers group. She helped in the church office assembling the weekly newsletter and Sunday bulletin until failing health curtailed her activities.

Birdene was preceded in death by sister, Iona Miles; mother, Goldie Longwell Miles; father, Ernest Miles; infant daughter, Beverly Ann Odell; husband, Oscar Nelson Odell; husband, E. Leroy Schoonover; and granddaughter, Debbie Odell Nerich.

She is survived by three children and their spouses, Conrad and Cheryl Odell of Hutchinson, Kan., Shelby and Bonnie Odell of Denver, Colo., and Biddy and Tom Kupke of Tulsa, Okla.; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; her sister, Elouise Quiring; and three nephews, Phil, Mike and Pat Quiring.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, 2011, at Central Christian Church, 1111 W. Broadway, Enid, Okla., with burial in Ames Cemetery. Service is under the direction of Anderson - Burris Funeral Home .

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the youth group of Central Christian Church, Enid, in tribute to Birdene's love and devotion to youth ministries.
