Bertha J. HUGHES

Ames Cemetery

June 24, 1877 - September 1, 1906

Bertha J. Wood was born in Green County, Iowa, and June 24, 1877. She came to Oklahoma in 1894 with her parents, who located near Lacey. Here she grew womanhood and on July 21, 1895, was married to John N. Hughes. To this union were born to girls, Andra and Lavancha, both of whom with the sorrowing father survived her. About a year after marriage Mr. and Mrs. Hughes moved to a farm 1 1/2 miles southwest of Ames where they have since made their home.

Mrs. Hughes had been failing in health for several months and everything was done that loving hands could do to stay the dread disease, consumption, but on Saturday morning, September 1, 1906 she was called to the mansion prepared for the faithful.

At the age of 15 years she was converted and united with the Church of Christ and lived the life of a Christian at all times, her daily thought being to do her Masters will. She longed to tarry that she might train the little ones to travel the straight and narrow way that leads from earth to heaven.

Oh, thou cold hand of death, unlock for her loved ones the portal of eternal life that when their bodies rest in their bids of earth their souls may recline in the bosom of God.

The funeral services were held in the Antioch church Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. A. J. Rhodes, her pastor, preaching the sermon, and the remains were laid to rest in the Ames Cemetery where loving hands perform the last sad rites to the departed.
