MENO, OK — Funeral service for Irl Wayne Cottom , 87, of Meno, Okla., will be 10 a.m. Saturday, June 14, 2014, at Faith Center in Meno, with the Revs. Rick Milam and Lyle Buller officiating. Burial will follow in Ames Cemetery, with arrangements by Anderson-Burris Funeral Home. Visitation with family is 6-7 p.m. today, June 13, at the funeral home.

On Feb. 15, 1927, Irl was born to Asa and Lillian (West) Cottom in Enid, Okla. He was raised on a farm south of Meno and attended Oak Glade Elementary School and graduated from Ames High School in 1945.

He attended Parker Chapel Church and was Sunday School Superintendent for several years. He accepted the Lord as his Savior in 1981, and served Him diligently until his death on Wednesday, June 11, 2014.

Irl joined the U.S. Navy in 1945, with his best friend Red Allen, serving in the Pacific during the war.

While custom harvesting he met his lifelong mate, Katherine Brown, and on Jan. 1, 1947, they were wed in Syracuse, Kan. They returned to Meno, where they made their home. Of this union three sons, Gearld Lee, Owen Bryan and Gene Irl Cottom , were born. After losing their home to a fire in 1961, they lived a few years in Ames while having their current home moved in and remodeled.

Irl worked at Meno Farmers Co-op and then transferred to Ringwood Co-op as manager, where he retired in 1990. He rarely missed an activity of his three sons and later attended many of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren's school activities.

Dad always had a story to tell and loved being with people, young and old. He always commented he was surprised he had any hair on his head due to the Mason girls always rubbing his head.

Irl is survived by his wife, Kay; sons, Gene Cottom and wife Oma, Owen Cottom and daughter-in-law, Jo Cottom ; grandchildren, Bryan Cottom , Melissa Packan, Terry Cottom , Shelia McHenry, Gary Cottom , Lori Stevenson, Lisa Trejo, Kendall Cottom ; 20 great-grandchildren; sister, Betty and husband Clayton Crosswhite; three nephews; and numerous cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Gearld Lee Cottom ; and grandson-in-law, Bob Packan.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made through the funeral home to Parker Chapel Church, Hospice Circle of Love, or Ames American Legion.

March 28, 1931 - April 27, 2021

Funeral services for Katherine M. “Kay” Cottom, 90 Meno, will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 1, 2021, in the Anderson-Burris Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Lyle Buller officiating. Burial will follow in the Ames Cemetery under the direction of Anderson-Burris Funeral Home. Visitation with the family present will be Friday evening from 6:00 to 7:00 pm at the funeral home.

Kay was born in the little town of Stonington, Colorado to Dale and Alta Norton Brown and passed away Tuesday, April 27, 2021. She loved the Lord all her life and shared her love with anyone that would listen especially her family. Even in her passing, she shared her love of the Lord in her final breaths.

She met the love of her life, Irl Wayne Cottom at the age of 13 while she was on a harvest crew. He was selling watermelons due to rain and was too wet to harvest and Kay asked how much they were and Irl Wayne said, “I’ll give you one for a date”, and so went the rest of the story. She moved to Enid to live with her sister Peggy and met up with Irl Wayne again and they were married January 1, 1947. She was only 15 and had only finished 8th grade but she had life knowledge that you would have thought she was a college graduate. Of this union, there were three sons born, Gerald, Gene and Owen. Kay accepted the Lord at the Ames Christian Church and was baptized.

Kay had many health issues throughout life, with asthma, breast cancer, and heart issues, but she always rose above and gave all the credit to the Lord.

Kay leaves us with a legacy of hard work and endurance and to always trust in the Lord. She is survived by Owen Cottom of Meno, Gene and wife Oma Cottom of Meno, and Jo Cottom-McWilliams and husband Randy of Drummond, 8 grandchildren, Bryan Cottom and Tamara of Sayre, OK, Melissa Packan of Drummond, Terry Cottom and Jamie of Enid, Sheila and Ron McHenry of Meno, Gary Cottom of Flora Vista, NM, Lori and James Stevenson of Enid, Lisa and Rolando Trejo of Ringwood, Kendall Cottom of Enid, 16 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Betty Crosswhite and husband Clayton of Meno, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and her treasured church family.

She was preceded in death by Irl Wayne, son Gerald, her parents and in-laws Asa and Lillian Cottom, sister Peggy and two half-brothers and half-sister, grandson Bob Packan and granddaughter Tracy Cottom.

Memorials may be made in her memory to Parker Chapel Church and Blue Star Mothers through Anderson-Burris Funeral Home.
