Gearld Lee COTTOM

Ames Cemetery

The memorial service for Gearld Cottom, 62, will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011, at Anderson-Burris Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Stanley Jenkins and Rev. Rick Griffith. Burial will follow in Ames Cemetery.

Gearld was born to Irl Wayne and Kay Cottom on Dec. 14, 1948, in Enid. He was raised on the farm south of Meno and graduated from Ames High School in 1967. He loved playing baseball and participating in the junior and senior plays, which he had numerous tales to tell about the things he and his classmates pulled on teachers and other classmates.

Gearld loved to tell stores about he and Bob Mackie and memories he had during their 12 years of school together. After graduation, he attended Northwestern University in Alva and Phillips University in Enid. He joined the Marine Corps on Feb. 10, 1969, and served three years, achieving the rank of sergeant.

On Feb. 1, 1969, Gearld and Jo Ann Wood were united in marriage at the Ames Baptist Church, and lived most of their married life in Ames, raising their two children, Bryan Lee and Melissa LeeAnn. Gearld always enjoyed watching his kids play sports and show livestock, and was very proud of their accomplishments.

Gearld worked at the Rodman Plant, starting in the maintenance department in October 1980, and retired in March 2011. He has many cherished friends there and appreciated every opportunity that the company provided.

Gearld loved to tell stories to his children and grandchildren of things that happened while he was growing up on the farm, and how they had a dog that wouldn't let his parents whip them, and the dog had to be put outside for the boys to be punished.

He is survived by his parents, Irl and Kay Cottom; wife, Jo Cottom; son, Bryan Cottom and wife Tamara of Sayre; daughter, Melissa Packan of Okarche; grandchildren, Bradlee and Brandon Cottom; Ty and Hannah Packan; step-grandchildren, Tim, Andrew and Josh Kelley, and Claire Zinser; brothers Owen Cottom, Gene Cottom and wife Oma; mother-in-law Lois Holland; brother-in-law, John Wood and wife Debra; Aunt Betty Crosswhite and husband Clayton; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Gearld was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Asa and Lillian Cottom; maternal grandparents; and his beloved son-in-law Robert Packan.

Gearld will be greatly missed by his wife Jo and the entire family, but will be remembered for all the fun times he provided for them.

He loved to hunt quail with his good friend Larry Mauck and hunt deer with his grandsons, and tell stories about the ones they missed. He enjoyed playing golf with friends, sons and grandsons.

He always said the best money he spent was taking his wife, children, and grandchildren on an Alaskan cruise, and the grandsons telling stories about their fishing excursion.

Gearld was a fun, loving and caring man and enjoyed helping anyone in need. He accepted the Lord at the Ames Christian Church as a teenager, and still attended there when health permitted.

Memorials may be made to Ames American Legion or Ames Christian Church. Condolences online at www.andersonburris.com.
