Dr John Wesley Hull

Dr. Hull was born August 24, 1920, at Oswalt and died May 25, 1992, in Houston, Texas, following a brief illness.
He was the son of Mose and Maggie Evelyne McCough Hull. Raised in Love County, Dr. Hull graduated from Orr High School in 1937. On December 31, 1938, he married the former Imogene R. Smith. He received a B.S. Degree in Education from Southeastern Oklahoma State University in 1941, a Masters Degree in Education from Oklahoma University in 1952, and a Doctorate in Education from Texas Christian University in 1961. Dr. Hull began his teaching career in Love County in 1941.
He served in the U.S. Army and spent some time in the oilfields. Dr. Hull served as principal at Wheeler Schools for two years and served as superintendent at Rexroat Schools from 1949-1961. In 1949, while coaching basketball at Rexroat, his girls basketball team won the first Annual Carter County Tournament. He moved to Wilson in 1961 and was superintendent from 1969-1981. On January 28, 1992, the Wilson High School Gymnasium was named the Dr. J. Wesley Hull Gymnasium in honor of the veteran Wilson educator. Dr. Hull was a member of the Wilson Rotary Club for 15 years and served as a deacon at the Cornish Primitive Baptist Church for 45 years.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Imogene Hull of the home south of Wilson; two daughters, Deborah Henderson and Desiree Shores of Wilson; two sons, Danny Hull and David Hull of Wilson; four sisters, Alice Morton of Wilson, Ethyl Allison and Lillie Coyle of Marietta, and Hazel Goins of Ardmore; two brothers, William Hull and Jack Hull of Marietta; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Interment was in the Simon Cemetery under the direction of the Alexander Funeral Home, Wilson.
Serving as pallbearers were Buddy Brown, R.B. Brown, Lawrence Forsythe, Jack Kennedy, Robert Holloway, Roy Hunziker, M.M. Clark, L.C. Loving, and Ronnie Shores. Honorary bearers included Donald Bolles, Grady Worsham, Charles Blodgett, Paul Morris, Fred Taliaferro, Joe Duncan, Grady Brewster, Paul Hallum, Ernest Moore, Jack Richardson, and Gary Labeth.
