Graveside rites for Albert Monroe Simmons, 82, longtime Simon resident, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, October 15, in the Simon Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Gillum officiating.
Mr. Simmons was born July 19, 1918, in Haleyville, the son of Alvy Lee "Joe" Simmons, Sr. and Jennie Maude "Kite" Simmons. He died Thursday, October 12, 2000, at Mercy Memorial Health Center in Ardmore.
He moved to Courtney Flat in 1927 with his family at the age of 11, then in 1939 they moved to Simon. During World War II he was with the CCCs, then afterwards worked the Pipeline in California and in Oklahoma. He returned to the farm at Simon in the late 1940s where he farmed and ranched the remainder of his life.
Survivors include one brother, Frank Simmons of Garland, Texas; two sisters, Josey V. Foutch of Viola, Arkansas, and Dolly F. Raines of Gainesville, Texas; 20 nieces and nephews, and 34 great-nieces and nephews.
Mr. Simmons was preceded in death by his father, Alvy Lee "Joe" Simmons, Sr. on June 8, 1966; his mother, Jennie Maude Simmons on September 20, 1991; twin sisters, Lucey and Ruthey Simmons on September 23, 1920; two brothers, Alvy Lee Simmons, Jr. on January 4, 1988, and Luther James Simmons in August of 1999.
Serving as pallbearers were great-nephews, Donnie Sanders, Randy Raines, Mitchell Raines, Jerry Wayne Gaines, Alan Tucker, Coy Tucker and Clayton Tucker.
Services were under the direction of Alexander Funeral Home, Wilson.
