Services for George Ernest Nelson Jr., 69, of Marietta, were held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, October 13, in the Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home Chapel, Marietta, with the Rev. Ronnie Harris officiating.
Mr. Nelson was born September 30, 1935, in Durham, the son of George Ernest Nelson Sr. and Velma F. Isabell. He died Monday, October 11, 2004, in North Texas Medical Center, Gainesville.
A resident of Loves Valley since 1986, Mr. Nelson was retired from Union 669 as a sprinkler fitter. He and Patricia Ann Steward were married July 19, 1955, in Tarrant County, Texas, and she preceded him in death on October 27, 2001. A graduate of Penn State with an associate's degree, Mr. Nelson served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a farmer in his youth, also an auctioneer, and at the time of his death was raising Polled Hereford cattle. Mr. Nelson was a member of Kings Highway Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas.
Survivors include four daughters and sons-in-law, Pam and Kenneth Stinson and Karen and Ray Don Lucas of Marietta, Marcia and Darren Robertson of Gainesville and Patti and Ardith Daniels of Cheyenne; two brothers, Charles Nelson of Allison, Texas, and Joe Nelson of Cleburne, Texas; seven sisters, Betty Mitchell and Darla Davis of Fort Worth, Agnes Long of Hico, Texas, Emily Brock and Barbara Weatherly of Boyd, Texas, Annie Nelson of White Settlement, Texas, and Lynette Sprowls of Azle, Texas; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Mr. Nelson was also preceded in death by his parents; one sister; and two brothers.
Pallbearers were Rick Brannan, Curtis Bowers, Donald Lucas, Aaron Robertson, Jeremy Riggs, Darren Robertson, Wayne Bond and B.J. Stinson. Honorary pallbearer was Billy Lucas.
Interment was in McAlister Cemetery, Overbrook, under the direction of Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home.
