Services for Velma Dowlearn, 87, of Ardmore, were held at 10 a.m., Monday, January 10, in the Rubottom Baptist Church, with the Rev. Don Clark officiating. Interment was in the Leon Cemetery. Arrangements were directed by Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home, Marietta.
Born September 18, 1917, at Burneyville, the daughter of Calvin and Emma Lyons Mauldin, she died Friday, January 7, 2005, at her residence.
A resident of Ardmore for the past seven years, she had previously made her home in Marietta. She and Joe Dowlearn were married February 15, 1963, in Sherman, Texas, and he preceded her in death on March 29, 1995. A 1936 graduate of Courtney High School, Mrs. Dowlearn then attended Draughn's Business School in Ardmore. The couple operated the Horn's Corner Grocery Store for 12 years, and then she was a route carrier for The Daily Ardmoreite for five years, relinquishing the job due to poor health. Mrs. Dowlearn was a member of the Rubottom Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Peggy Louise Crummey of Rubottom; three grandchildren, Kathy Hays, Michael Arledge and Lisa Arledge; four great grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and dear friends, Ann and Mae.
She was also preceded in death by her parents.
Pallbearers were Clint Lyons, Glenis Hartman, Stan Middleton, David Black, Earl Ray Hicks and Don Musser.
