Services for Wilma Elizabeth Choate, 92, were held at 2 p.m., Thursday, August 4, at Marietta's First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Tommy Higle officiating. Interment was in Lakeview Cemetery, Marietta. Arrangements were directed by Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home, Marietta.
Born November 24, 1912, at Sanger, Texas, the daughter of Joseph Andrew and Ila Alveretta Middlebrooks Fife, she died Monday, August 1, 2005, in Lake Country Nursing Center, Marietta.
She had been a resident of Marietta most of her life. She and Henry Willis Choate Jr. were married August 23, 1936, in Marietta, and he preceded her in death on March 12, 1952. A 1930 graduate of Marietta High School, Mrs. Choate attended Trinity College and Southeastern State College. She taught school for a few years before becoming editor and publisher of the Marietta Monitor. Always actively involved in community affairs, Mrs. Choate served as secretary of the Love County Chamber of Commerce for many years, on the Frontier Days Committee, and the Love County Health Department Board. She was a member of the Mahota Memorial Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, H. Willis Choate III and Norene of Marietta; two grandsons, H. Willis Choate IV and Susan and John Justin Choate of Marietta; four great-grandchildren, Catherine Elizabeth Choate and John Conner Choate of Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Grace Ann Choate and Aden Cole Choate of Marietta; and two nephews, Earl Bradford Jr. of Sulphur Springs, Texas and Jack Bennett Dillard of Waskom, Texas.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Floyd Fife in 1964; and two sisters, Avis Bradford on March 26, 2001 and Virgie Dillard on October 18, 2004.
Pallbearers were Joe Martin, Jerry McGill, Danny Atterberry, Boyd Martin, Jeff McLemore, Don Sessions, Alvin Baker and Lynn Puckett.
