Graveside services for Thomas Marion "Curly" Culwell, Jr., 87, of Overbrook, were held at 2 p.m., Thursday, March 1, at Simon Cemetery, Love County, with the Rev. David Colaw officiating.
Mr. Culwell was born January 3, 1914, in Simon, the son of Almenia Lavenia "Brownie" Samuel and Thomas Marion Culwell, Sr. He died February 27, 2001, in Ardmore.
He moved to the Meadowbrook area with his family then returned to Simon where he attended elementary school and high school in Wilson. He and Altha N. Sexton were married in the spring of 1932 in Wilson. Mr. Culwell became a pilot in his late 20s and owned one of the first airplanes in this area. He loved to buzz the farmers and their mules in the fields. He was a flight instructor during World War II, then later served in the U.S. Army. After his honorable discharge, Mr. Culwell returned to Simon where he farmed and ranched the remainder of his life. He was also an amateur radio operator and a member of the Eastman Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of the home; a daughter, Almenia Culwell of Overbrook; a son, Thomas Monroe Culwell of Overbrook; two granddaughters, Jeanette and her husband, Aaron Carlile, of Overbrook and Cheryl Kay Culwell of Davis; two great-granddaughters, Brandi Kay Carlile and Lori Lynn Carlile of Overbrook; a great-grandson, Billy Bob Ball of Overbrook, and a great-great-granddaughter, Kaylyn Dawn Barbour.
Services were under the direction of Alexander Funeral Home, Wilson.
