A 42-year-old Falconhead man died early Tuesday morning of an accidental gunshot wound.
Larry Dale "Pete" Carlile and his wife Penny were checking cattle shortly before midnight, and had stopped on the Burneyville Road approximately one mile west of Red River Ranch. He managed the Sizelove Ranch which is alongside the road.
County officers were told that as he was exiting the vehicle driven by his wife a 9 MM pistol fell from the vehicle and discharged when it struck the ground.
The bullet struck Carlile in the lower leg and traveled upward, severing an artery. His wife was able to get him into the vehicle and transported him to the Mercy Love County emergency room.
By the time they reached the hospital he had lost a large amount of blood. He was pronounced dead at 12:51 a.m.
The Sheriff's office was notified by the hospital of the incident at 12:13 a.m., shortly after he arrived at the hospital.
Sheriff Joe Russell, with the assistance of the OSBI, investigated the incident. The pistol and spent cartridge were recovered by County officers in the road.
The death has been ruled accidental.
