(permission granted)

Hector Ramon Vela peacefully left this life surrounded by his brothers and sisters in arms, Thursday, January 13, 2022, at the Oklahoma City VA Medical Center.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 18, 2022, in the Mt. Zion Cemetery in Thackerville with Pastor Brett Alberda officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home before the service. Services have been entrusted to the Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Marietta.

Hector was born October 16, 1954, in San Diego, TX to Filomeno and Gabriela (Granado) Vela. He grew up in San Diego and graduated from San Diego High School. Not long after, Hector began service to his country in 1st Battalion 51st Infantry Division of the United States Army. After spending some time overseas in Germany, he was honorably discharged in June of 1976. He later met the love of his life, Carmen Martinez, at a dance. He didn’t want to miss out on his opportunity with her, so he asked her to marry him and after a quick courtship, they married on March 4, 1978, in Kingsville, TX.

Hector was a simple, yet loving family man. He enjoyed working on cars and tinkering with things around the house. He loved doing yardwork and making his lawn look perfect. He treasured visiting with family and especially enjoyed any time he could spend with his grandchildren.

Hector was preceded in death by his parents; by one sister, Estella Vela; and by three brothers, Thomas Vela, Ernest Vela, and Meno Vela.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Carmen of Thackerville; two daughters, Annette Vela and Lisa Vela both of Thackerville; a son, Daniel Vela of Terrell, TX; three brothers, Oscar Vela and wife Linda, Bartlor Vela and wife Minerva, and Mickey Vela and wife Maria Alicia; one sister, Zulema Maladona; and five grandchildren, Jacob DeHoyos, Alexis DeHoyos, Kaci Vela, Jayden Eidson, and Adelia Vela.

Casket bearers are Annette Vela, Lisa Vela, Debra Links Bentley, Mickey Vela, Lainey Bowers, and Junior Vela.
