Graveside services for Zelma Alice Barnes Monkres, of Leon, were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 14, at the Leon Cemetery with Rev. Jimmy May officiating.

Born November 29, 1919 in Portsmouth, Virginia, the daughter of Ira and Margaret Barnes, she died Friday, September 9, 2011 at a healthcare facility in Portsmouth. Mrs. Monkres was raised in Portsmouth graduating from high school in 1937. She met and soon married James Bennett “Jim” Monkres. They met at the Skippy Peanut Butter Manufacturing Plant where they were both employed. They later moved to California and eventually relocated to the Fort Worth and Dallas area where Zelma was employed by Republic Insurance from which she retired after many years in the clerical department. Zelma was a member of the Cottage Place Methodist Church of Portsmouth.

Preceding her in death were his parents; husband, Jim Monkres, June 30, 1979; a stepdaughter, Jacque Monkres Miller, 2007; grandchildren, Jaryl Arthur, 2004, Jamie Arthur, 1985, Charla Jean Arthur, 2007; two sisters, Margaret and Singie; and two brothers, Sonny and Brother.

She is survived by three stepchildren, Pierce Monkres and wife, Sandy of Lake Konowa, Texas, Joan Arthur and Jeleen Sumrall, both of Ardmore; grandchildren, Janett Salazar, Joni and Marvin Conway, Jackie Dale and Vicky Miller, Jaylin and Kelly Miller, Jimmy Monkres, Paula Monkres, Joie Monkres and Josh Monkres; 13 great-grandchildren; 26 great-great-grandchildren; four great-great-great-grandchildren; and cousins, Harry and Barry Jenkins, both of Durham, North Carolina.

Pallbearers were Jackie Dale Miller, Jimmy Monkres, John Blackwood, David Gilliam, Tim Arthur, Derek Salazar, Marvin Conway and Jason Conway.
