Services for David Royce Howerton, 78, of Jimtown were held at 2 p.m., Monday, June 23 in the Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Ron Elmore officiating.

Interment followed in the Leon Cemetery. 

Born November 1, 1935, at Wilson, the son of Roy A. and Ruth Cunningham Howerton, he died Friday, June 20, 2014, at his residence. Mr. Howerton was raised at Wilson, attending Wilson Schools, and lived there until his marriage to Charlene Gordon on February 11, 1963. The couple has since been residents of Love County. David retired as a pumper in the oil and gas industry.

He also served in the U.S. Army from October 1958 to September 1960, and then transferred to the Army Reserves for a total of six and one-half years of service. One of David’s greatest pleasures was having all of the family together. He was a member of the Wilson Church of Christ.

Preceding him in death were his parents; a son, Brent Howerton and four sisters, Betty Clendenen, Iris Papes, Dixie Herrell and Mary Lou Howerton.

Survivors include his wife, Charlene of the home; son and daughter-in-law, R.J. and Cheryl Howerton of Whitesboro, Texas; daughter and son-in-law, Vikki and Greg Hallum of Rubottom; daughter-in-law, Tanya Howerton Marley of Atoka; sister and brother-in-law, Sandra and Al Downs of Ardmore; brother-in-law, Johnny Gordon of Jimtown; sister-in-law, Carolyn Cooper, also of Jimtown; five grandchildren, Steven Doggett and wife Amanda, Ally Howerton, Bree Hallum, Avery Howerton and Evan Howerton and two great-grandchildren, Luke Doggett and Case Doggett.

Serving as pallbearers were Joe Gordon, Jay Gordon, Kurt Gordon, Jack Ferguson, David Cartwright and Kent Foster. Honorary bearers were Kenneth McKee, Recie Holliman, Tommy Hartman, Charlie Hobbs, Tommy Holder, Adolfo Ramon and Keith Gordon.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Cross Timbers Hospice or the charity of one’s choice.
