Services for Ronald Berry, 89, of Falconhead, Burneyville, were held at 10 a.m., Saturday, August 30, in the Leon Baptist Church, with the Rev. Don Clark officiating, assisted by Sgt. Darrell Holland.

Interment with military honors was in the Leon Cemetery.

Born November 29, 1918, in Briton, Connecticut, the son of Arthur and Mamie Jewel Berry, he died Wednesday, August 27, 2008, in Mercy Health Love County Hospital, Marietta. A resident of the Falconhead community for the past 28 years, Mr. Berry had previously made his home in Visalia, California, where he was employed in the Knudsen Cottage Cheese Creamery. He and Maggie Bernice Holland were married in 1962 in Las Vegas. A veteran of World War II, Mr. Berry served in the U.S. Army from November 1941 to October 1945. While in service he was a sharpshooter on guard patrol, serving with the 564th Signal Air Warning Battalion. He participated in battles in Rome, Central Europe, Rhineland, Southern France and Northern France and was awarded numerous medals including the Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with Bronze Arrowhead.

His hobbies included eating out, playing dominoes, mowing the lawn and traveling. As a young man he liked to go hunting. Mr. Berry was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his wife, Bernice Berry of the home at Falconhead; three sons and daughter-in-law, Norman and Rosalie Berry and Martin Barry of Bakersfield, California, and Jim Johnson of Burneyville; a daughter, Ronna Ehly of Bakersfield; six grandchildren, Kimberly, Timothy, David, Janeen, Cindy and Dustin; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Earl and Norman; and three sisters, Mildred, Hazel and Madeline.

Pallbearers were Jeff Parrish, Blake Holland, Terry Baker, Lance Parker, Donnie Hurst and Barry Hurst. Honorary pallbearers were Greg Parker, Daniel Parker, Gabe Parker, Christopher Holland, Jacob Holland, Dr. Tom O’Connor, nurses and staff of Mercy Health Love County, and the staff of Cross Timbers Hospice and Mercy Home Health.
