Known locally as W.T., Winston Thomas Warthen, Sr. of Marietta, OK, was
born August 16, 1927, at Burneyville, OK, the son of Harvey Monroe and
Myrtle Mae Nelson Warthen. He went to be with his Lord and Savior on
Tuesday, January 15, 2008, in Integris Southwest Medical Center,
Oklahoma City, OK, at the age of 80.
A resident of this area all of his life, Mr. Warthen attended school in
Marietta and graduated from Marietta High School in 1943. He then
attended business school in Ardmore, OK, before serving one year in the
Merchant Marines, traveling from the Mediterranean Sea to the Pacific
Ocean. After his tour of duty he returned to Marietta to marry the love
of his life, Pauline Harris, on February 29, 1948. Mr. Warthen was a
volunteer firefighter with the Marietta Fire Department, retiring after
more than 20 years. He operated a service station with his father for
several years before joining the United States Postal Service. Retiring
after 25 years of service, his last assignment was as Postmaster at
Wilson, OK.
Locally, he was active in the Pentecostal Holiness Church for 56 years.
Mr. Warthen helped found the Pioneer Museum and served on its Board of
Directors. He also served as an inspector with the Love County Election
Board. Mr. Warthen also spent over 40 years acquiring real estate and
helping the community by providing affordable housing for many local
families.
Preceding him in death were his parents; and two sisters, Winona Stewart
Epperson and Ida Belle Alexander.
He is survived by his wife, Pauline Warthen of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Winston & Sue Warthen of
Marietta, OK; three daughters and sons-in-law, Gale & Roy Wickware of
Marietta, OK, Jan McCarthy of Ardmore, OK, and Paula and Charles Bench
of Ardmore, OK; 8 grandchildren, Todd Wickware, Aric Wickware, Kevin
Wickware, Devin Wickware, Brian T. Warthen, Mischelle Brown, Matthew
Bench and Miranda Fincher; 10 great-grandchildren; 1
great-great-grandchild.

Kevin Wickware, Todd Wickware, Lamar Brown, Matthew Bench, Aric Wickware
and Brian T. Warthen. Honorary bearers: Roy Wickware, Charles Bench,
