Graveside services for Vida Louise Allen Robertson, 90, of Baird, Texas were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 13 at the Lakeview Cemetery, Marietta with Brother John Sconce officiating.

Born January 19, 1930 at Ringling, the second of five children of John and Louise Brockreide Allen, she died Friday, January 8, 2021 at Homestead Nursing, Baird.

Vida grew up and was a resident of Love County for most of her life. Vida graduated from Marietta High School in 1948. On March 5, 1949, Vida was picked up by Gene Robertson at her parents’ home in Shady Dale and together the two drove to Gainesville, Texas, to be married. Both Gene and Vida agreed to start their marriage with each contributing $100. Vida was prepared and saved up for her portion of the funds, while Gene borrow his portion – a fact that Vida did not learn until they had been married for some time. Through the course of her marriage to Gene, which would last for over 68 years, Vida had many adventures in her life and career. Vida worked for Love County National Bank, First National Bank, and later retired from the Bank of Love County in Marietta. Vida held numerous other jobs along the way to support and better her family. Vida worked for Love County as the “Tag Agent”, as an operator for Bell Telephone until the phone company went to “dial” service, Little Brownie Bakers Cookie Shop, and as a PBX telephone operator at Turner Lodge during numerous golf tournaments. In 1969, Vida was faithful in following her husband Gene’s wishes to open the third location of Robertson’s Hams in Baird. Robertson’s Hams, a must-stop for travelers in Oklahoma and Texas, was started by Gene’s older brother, “Tup.”

In 1977, Gene and Vida decided it was time to return home to Marietta. Vida, whose hands never experienced idleness could be found helping at Nita’s Flowers and worked for years as a trusted friend of the McGehee Family in their catfish restaurant and sand plant. Frontier Days in Marietta was an annual event Vida always looked forward to. Vida was proud to serve as the “Pioneer Queen” alongside her husband Gene as “Pioneer King” in 2009 at Frontier Days. Her favorite pastimes included sewing, doing yardwork, and raising a garden. Vida accepted Christ and continued to follow Him throughout her life. During her time in Oklahoma, Vida was a charter member of Eastside Baptist Church before joining the congregation of Shady Dale Baptist Church, where she led a campaign to construct a new church building in her role as church treasurer.

Vida taught Sunday School classes to children for over 20 years and enjoyed hosting them in her home to make “roll out” sugar cookies, just as she did with her own children and grandchildren. Vida was blessed with five grandchildren – Sheryl Robertson Robinson (Jamie), Amy Robertson, Samuel, Sage (Talita) and Spencer (Meredith) Goldsmith. She enjoyed her grandchildren’s summer visits at her home outside of Marietta, where they would garden, ride bicycles, play games, stay up late watching “Law and Order,” and bake more “roll out” sugar cookies than could be counted.

Vida was preceded in death by her husband, Gene Robertson, parents, John and Louise Allen; three brothers, Paul Allen, Bill Allen, and Wilton Allen; sister, Marcena Wagner; and her daughter-in-law, Kathleen Robertson.

Vida is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Gene Allen and Sheila Robertson of Abilene, Texas; daughter and son-in-law, Sally and Scotty Goldsmith of Baird; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren, Sterling and Ireland Robinson and Avery, Elliott, Reese, Clara and Brazos Goldsmith; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Serving as pallbearers were Rob Robertson, Michael Robertson, Larry Kerr, Rex Parker, Lynn Puckett, and Preston McGehee. Honorary bearers were Ron Bond, Clay Robertson, Jerry Kerr, and Bob Brannan.

The family requests donations to Serving Him – Healthcare Ministries (972) 370-4441/www.servinghim.org, or the Love County Museum (580) 276-9020.
