Interment with military honors followed in Lakeview Cemetery, Marietta.
Born April 5, 1925, at Thackerville, the son of William Riley and Lillie
Mae Simmons Roberson, he died Friday, May 6, 2016, in Mercy Health Love
County, Marietta.
Herman was a lifetime resident of Southern Oklahoma. He and the former
Juanita L. "Dute" Hays were married on April 20, 1946, in Marietta, and
she preceded him in death on October 29, 2003. Herman served in the U.S.
Army almost 20 years, including World War II, as a liaison during the
Korean Conflict, the Berlin Crisis, and retired in 1962 from the Army
Reserves with the rank of Colonel. Mr. Roberson was also employed by the
U.S. Postal Service as Assistant Postmaster in Gainesville, Texas.
Herman was a very active member of Marietta's First Baptist Church and
considered the membership his second family. He enjoyed singing in the
choir, bowling in church leagues, and just sharing the Bible, which is
evident through his more than 60 years as a Sunday School teacher. His
greatest love was spending time with his daughters and their families.
However, a close second was his love of gardening. Herman was well known
for his ability to grow exceptional vegetables and his love of sharing
them, especially okra, corn, and cantaloupe.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents;
grandson, Christopher Caldwell; son-in-law, Danny Johnson; two brothers,
Clifford Roberson and David Roberson; and sister, Hazel Nicholas.
Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Lydia Johnson of
Edmond, Tuya and Calvin Burton of Mannsville, and Angie and Donnie
Caldwell of Newcastle; six grandchildren, Brian Johnson, Holly Qualls,
Kelly Johnson, Tim McCool, Heather McLean, and Amy Caldwell; 18
great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and
nephews.
Serving as pallbearers were John McBride, Joe Martin, Mark Bond, Marcus
Dees, Clay Robertson, and Reid Schnorrenberg. Honorary bearers were
members of the Roberson's Rangers Sunday School Class and the staff of
Cross Timbers Hospice.
The family suggest memorial contributions to Cross Timbers Hospice, 207
"C" Street Northwest, Ardmore, OK 73401.
