Services with military honors for Fred McKay, 97, of Marietta were held at 2 p.m. Friday, September 27 in the Chapel of Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home, Marietta with Brother Murray McMurray officiating and Lawrence Anderson assisting.

Interment followed in the Lakeview Cemetery, Marietta.

Born September 16, 1922, at Bomar, Love County, the son of Ben and Lura Reasoner McKay, he died Tuesday, September 24, 2019, in Mercy Health Love County, Marietta.

Fred had been a resident of Love County most of his life. He attended school at Bowles and Meadowbrook in Love County. On December 3, 1942, he was drafted into the United States Army. Fred spent three years in the Army serving during World War II and was honorably discharged on September 30, 1945. For his service he was awarded the EAME Service Ribbon, Silver Service Star Medal, Bronze Star Medal, and GO 172 HqXV Corps 45.

Fred married Billie Jo Harris on February 7, 1943. They celebrated 72 years of marriage prior to her death on March 23, 2014. Fred was a farmer, rancher, truck driver and mechanic throughout his life. He was a worker with an amazing work ethic. He was a good mechanic and was always tinkering with cars. Fred loved taking care of his cattle and helping kids in 4-H and FFA. He enjoyed going to the sale barn. He volunteered at the Love County Livestock Show as Swine Superintendent for many years. Fred was a member of the American Legion. He liked gardening, taking care of his dogs, dancing and kids. Most of all, he loved attending birthday parties and spending time with his grandkids and family.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Lanelle Lawson and a brother, J.B. McKay.

Survivors include two sons, Billy Fred McKay of Marietta and Stephen Mark McKay and wife Jerlyn of Ardmore; four daughters, Linda Bollinger, Barbara McKay, and Kelly Chambers and husband Jerry, all of Marietta, and Kathy Simpler and husband Steve of Ardmore; brother, Frank McKay of Marietta; sister, Betty Anderson of Oklahoma City; sister-in-law, Helen Burkhart of California; brother-in-law, James Calhoun of Ardmore; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Serving as pallbearers were Chad Bollinger, Chris McKay, Scott Simpler, Jennifer Simpler, Tyson Miller, Matthew Miller and Ben McKay. Honorary bearers were Ted Freeman, Jimmy Don Long, Joe Bell, Tom Thompson, Ben Thompson, Bill Caldwell, Mark Hobbs, Jerry Norton, Charles McKay, Willis McKay, friends from the sale barn and coffee drinkers from Carl’s.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Encompass Home Health and at Mercy Health Love County for their compassionate care for Fred.
