Services for Vella Fern McCorkle, 74, of Marietta, were held at 11 a.m., Saturday, August 2, in the Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home Chapel, Marietta, with the Rev. Tommy Higle officiating.
Interment was held in the Lakeview Cemetery, Marietta.
Born November 22, 1933, in Love County, the daughter of Willard and Marie Scivally Holmes, she died Wednesday, July 30, 2008, in Mercy Health Love County Hospital, Marietta.
A resident of the Greenville community since 1978, Mrs. McCorkle had previously made her home in Irving, Texas. She and Wilson M. McCorkle Jr. were married September 27, 1952 in Irving, and he preceded her in death on October 22, 1990. Mrs. McCorkle was employed as a buyer for Rawson Drug in Dallas for 16 years, and in 1991 went to work as a loan officer for New State Loan in Marietta, a position she held for 12-1/2 years. Her hobbies included gardening, cooking and sewing, especially making quilts. She was a member of Marietta’s First Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Ronnie McCorkle of Texarkana, Texas; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Randall Jackson of Gainesville, Texas; six grandchildren, Rebecca and Carlos Figueroa of Katy, Texas, Michael and Lori McCorkle of Waxahachie, Texas, Kristina McCorkle of Fort Worth, Texas, Justin McCorkle of Oklahoma City, Amber and Seth Gunn of Guthrie and Tammy and Mike Smith of Gainesville, Georgia; and five great-grandchildren, Breeanna, Julian, Maylie, Tristalynn and Cassidy.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; a daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Clayton “Curley” McGill; a granddaughter, Pam Jackson; and two sisters.
Pallbearers were Jason Sampson, John Sampson, Michael McCorkle, Johnny Burris, Carlos Figueroa and Ethan Wimverly. Online guest book: wattsfuneralhome.com
