Graveside services for John L. Mayes, 72, of Marietta were held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 2 in Lakeview Cemetery, Marietta, with Pastor Brett Alberda officiating.
 
Born April 15, 1944, in Marietta, the son of Jack and Sythia Blackmon Mayes, he died Thursday, April 28, 2016, in Mercy Health Love County, Marietta.
 
A resident of Love County all of his life, John completed 12 years at Greenville School and then cowboyed for a cattle company for more than 23 years. He married the former Bonnie Bell in Marietta on November 28, 1998. John was employed as a road hand and truck driver for Love County District #1 for a number of years, retiring in 2014. He enjoyed gardening and checking cows and chickens, but most of all he loved family cookouts and time spent with family, especially his children and grandchildren.
 
Preceding him in death were his parents; brother, Billy Jack Mayes; sister, James Marie Curry; and brothers-in-law, Joe Kirk and Carl Curry. 
 
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie of the home; five sons and daughters-in-law, Rodger Travis and Lisa Mayes and John Olie and Melinda Mayes, all of Gainesville, Texas; Michael Otis and Robin Mayes of Leon, Justin Leslie Mayes and his partner Joe Reyna of Dallas, and Josh Mayes of Marietta; two daughters and son-in-law, Annie Mayes-Lane and husband Johnny of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and Gina Mayes of Gainesville; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Alyne Kirk and Linda Kerr, both of Marietta, Joyce and Joe Allgood of Ardmore and Margaret Jo and Bill Hammer of Round Rock, Texas; sister-in-law, Lois Mayes of Ardmore; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.
 
Serving as pallbearers were grandsons, Kyle Hallum, Josh Mayes, Levi Mayes, Trey Mayes, Eric Harris, and John Casey Cummins; and Clancy Hallum.
