Dr. M.D. Looney has this week announced his retirement as a practicing physician, following 50 years devoted to the practice of medicine in Love County.

Dr. Looney, who will be 86 years old on February 9, was graduated from Barnes Medical College, St. Louis, Missouri in 1907 and came to Burneyville to open his first office. It was there in 1908 that he was married to Miss Euna Burney.

In 1929 Dr. and Mrs. Looney and their two children, Peggy and Bill, moved to Marietta and Dr. Looney opened his office in the First National Bank building. They made their home there until 1950 when following a bout with arthritis, Dr. Looney decided to move back to their farm at Burneyville and retire.

They moved back to Burneyville, but his retirement was very brief as his former patients continued to depend on him for their medical needs. As his health improved and his line of patients grew, he decided to build a small office building in his front yard. This he did but in 1957 the building burned and all of his equipment was lost. Again he thought of retirement, but not for long and a new building was constructed to house his office.

For the past two years, he has limited his practice and has now definitely made up his mind that it is time to retire.

He was honored on his 84th birthday with a reception given by Love County friends at the Waco Turner Lodge at Burneyville, which was attended by hundreds of friends, former patients, and current patients from far and wide.

Dr. Looney is loved and respected by the people of Love County and his 59 years spent ministering to the needs of the people as their family doctor is a true testimonial of his feeling toward the people living here.
