In her 99th year toward heaven, on May 18, 2020, Ruth Evelyn Liddell Langford left her large and grieving family in a state of wonder for the life and joy she brought to them.

The youngest of five children, Ruth was born in 1921 in Marietta to John C. and Mattie Liddell with whom she will be laid to rest in Lakeview Cemetery. The last years of her life laid out before us like a Christmas feast, rich and bountiful. Ruth had the constant devotion of her granddaughter Shannon and her great-grandsons Max and Alex, as well as the love of her two children, Bobby and Elaine. Ruth blessed four generations of her kith and kin with love. When she sang publicly for the last time with a country and western band at her nephew’s birthday party in December of 2019, the lyrics of that song: “I’m right back where I’ve always really been” in her beautiful contralto voice brought a thunderous applause. This beautiful, talented, selfless woman, who in the poet Whitman’s words had “a lovely and soothing death,” remains a sublime mystery. She has been wafted home, yet she remains moored in our hearts forever.
