Memorial services for Robert Hughes,
Jr., 72, of Marietta will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, February 3 in
the Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home Chapel, Marietta with Lawrence
Anderson officiating. Military honors will be provided by a United
States Army Honors Team.
Born October 14, 1939, in Love County, the son of Robert and Juanita Embry Hughes, he died Monday, January 30, 2012, in Mercy Health Love County, Marietta.
A resident of Love County all of his life, Mr. Hughes graduated from Marietta High School in 1959.
He served in the United States Army and National Guard from March 1961 to February 1967 and was awarded the Army Commendation Medal. As a longtime employee of Goodrich Funeral Home, Mr. Hughes drove the ambulance and was certified by the Oklahoma State Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors as an Embalmers Registered Apprentice. He was also employed by Texaco as a roustabout/pumper for many years. Mr. Hughes was active in the community, serving on the Ambulance Board and City Council for a number of years. He enjoyed going to horse races and cooking, but most of all he was always willing to assist the elderly shut-ins of the community.
He and the former Mary “Sissy” Riley were married on May 29, 1965. Mr. Hughes was a member of Marietta’s Eastside Baptist Church.
Preceding him in death were his parents; three brothers, Leonard Hughes, Buddy Hughes and Ernest Hughes; a sister, Ruby Owens; and a special nephew, Travis Ladner.
Survivors include his wife, Sissy Hughes of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Robert Paul and Rebecca Hughes of Marietta; one daughter and son-in-law, Rachel and Pedro Fernandez, also of Marietta; a brother, Austin Hughes of Marietta; three sisters, Dorothy Clifton of Marietta, Geneta Clover of Oklahoma City and Estlena Stuckey of Oakland; four grandchildren, Pedro, Ana, Martin and Marisa Fernandez; a great-grandson, Alex Fernandez; and a special niece and caregiver, Wanda Menchinella.
