Graveside services for Vernon L. Griffin, 88, of Marietta, were held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, September 12, in the Lakeview Cemetery, Marietta, with the Rev. Tommy Higle officiating.

Born February 21, 1919 at Greenville, the son of James Paul and Berta Mae Peery Griffin, he died Monday, September 10, 2007, in the VA Center, Ardmore. Mr. Griffin was a resident of Love County most of his life. He and Alyne Thompson were married October 1, 1945 in Cooke County, Texas. A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army with the 1st Cavalry and also construction and was awarded numerous citations including a Purple Heart, the American Defense Service Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two Bronze Stars. He worked in the oil fields for many years, retiring in 1971 as a driller. Mr. Griffin was a Mason.

Survivors include his wife, Alyne Griffin of the home; two sons and daughter-in-law, Tommy Griffin and Roger and Becki Griffin of Ardmore; a daughter, Janie Caldwell of Marietta; four grandchildren, Greg Griffin, Whitney Casey, Bucky Caldwell and Blaine Caldwell; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, J.P. Griffin Jr., Warren Griffin, Bill Griffin and David Griffin; a grandson, Richey Robbins; and three sisters, twins Lavonne and Lavelle Griffin and Cloretta Griffin.

Honorary pallbearers were David Kerr, Jerry Kerr, Bucky Caldwell, Blaine Caldwell, Greg Griffin and David Griffin.
