Mrs. Cobb’s Murder Still Unsolved

The January 1990, murder of a Marietta resident remains unsolved. Ethel Cobb, 80, was beaten to death in her home in the southeast section of town.

Mrs. Cobb, who lived alone, was discovered lying on the living room floor of her home in the 400 block of Southeast Fifth. She was discovered by then Police Chief Charlie Dunn. Friends and family members had become concerned when she didn’t answer her phone and asked Dunn to check on her welfare.

In spite of an extensive investigation by City, County and State officers no arrest was made. The offer of a sizable reward for information was made, but it produced no creditable leads.

Officers were never able to determine if anything was taken from the home. One theory is that Mrs. Cobb surprised her attacker in the living room of her home and was beaten to death by the intruder. There was no sign of forced entry into the home.

Mrs. Cobb’s body was found Sunday, January 21, around 1 p.m. She had been killed sometime the previous day. Mrs. Cobb had talked on the phone with a friend Friday evening.

The house had not been ransacked nor was it ever determined that anything was missing. She died from numerous blows to the face and head, but no weapon was found.
