Services for Billy James Chambers, 78, of Ardmore, formerly of Marietta, were held at 11 a.m., Thursday, August 21, at Marietta’s First Baptist Church, with J.T. Tucker and Mike Sampson officiating.

Private interment with full military honors was held in Lakeview Cemetery, Marietta.

Born August 20, 1929, at Leon, the son of Sam Garvey and Ina Pearl McBride Chambers, he died Monday, August 18, 2008, at Mercy Memorial Health Center, Ardmore.

Mr. Chambers served in the U.S. Air Force for 21 years, serving in the Korean and Vietnam wars. He received the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. Mr. Chambers was stationed in Thailand during the Vietnam War. He retired as a Tech Sergeant. Mr. Chambers then worked at Uniroyal for 20 years and retired as a shift supervisor. He enjoyed golfing, dancing and traveling. An avid sports fan he especially liked baseball. Mr. Chambers was the emcee for the Frontier Days Celebration in Marietta for many years. He had lived most of his life in Love County. Mr. Chambers was a member of Marietta’s First Baptist Church.

Survivors include his beloved sweetheart, Alice Tucker and her family of Ardmore; two sons and daughter-in-law, Major General James Edwin Chambers and Elaine of Fort Lee, Virginia and Billy Joe Chambers of Henderson, Nevada; three daughters and sons-in-law, Jennifer Lynn and Eddie Hughes of Hulbert, Sharon Janelle and Mike Sampson of Thackerville and Robin Pearl Thompson of Marietta; a brother and sister-in-law, Sam G. Jr. and Eula Chambers of Marietta; a sister and brother-in-law, Ada Jo and Lewis Foster of Marietta; 14 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Joann E. Chambers on February 8, 1990; a brother, Wayne Chambers; and a sister, Genevieve Donaldson.
