Graveside services with military honors for Richard “Bud” Burney, 79, of Ardmore, were held at 10 a.m., Monday, April 24, in the Lakeview Cemetery, Marietta, with the Rev. Billie Brewer officiating. Arrangements were directed by Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home, Marietta.

Born April 28, 1926, in Marietta, the son of Douglas Johnson and Iris Belle Autry Burney, he died Thursday, April 20, 2006, in Mercy Memorial Health Center, Ardmore. A resident of Ardmore for the past 20 years, he moved there from Lafayette, Louisiana. He and Mary Lynn Patterson were married October 31, 1947, in Gainesville, Texas, and she preceded him in death on October 17, 1980. Mr. Burney was retired from the Oklahoma Department of Tourism as the Director of State Golf Courses. A veteran of World War II, Mr. Burney served in the U.S. Army in Europe and was awarded the EAME Campaign Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Meritorious Unit Award, Victory Ribbon, Army Occupation Ribbon (Germany) and two Overseas Service Bars. He enjoyed playing golf and listening to jazz music. Mr. Burney was a member of the First Baptist Church, Ardmore.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard J. and Darla Burney of Woodward and Patrick D. and Ginger Burney of Orlando, Florida; six grandchildren, Dawn McMahon, Craig Burney, Doug Burney, Brian Burney, Davin Cardwell and Ashley Blackburn; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Kathleen Roberts of Marietta; and special friends of the family, Terry and Edith Brewer of Ardmore.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Pallbearers were Richard Buchanon, Brian Burney, Doug Burney, Shawn McMahon, Tim Timms and II Lt. Craig Burney. Honorary pallbearers were “The Bunch.”
