Services for J. Claude Brannan, 87, of Marietta, were held at 10 a.m., Saturday, August 9, in the Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home Chapel, Marietta, with Bro. Travis Huffman, Lawrence Anderson and Bob Brannan officiating.

Interment was held in the Lakeview Cemetery, Marietta.

Born February 24, 1921, in Wichita Falls, Texas, the son of Raymond and Bessie B. Myers Brannan, he died Tuesday, August 5, 2008, in the Plaza at Edgemere, Dallas.

He married his high school sweetheart, Beverly Jane Autry on May 11, 1939, in Tishomingo. She preceded him in death on December 28, 2001. A resident of Love County for over 85 years, Mr. Brannan was a rancher, husband, father and active community and church member. He served on the Love County Soil Conservation Board for 50 years and was appointed to the State Board, serving concurrently in that position for 20 years. Mr. Brannan served as an appointed member of the Oklahoma Horse Racing commission, on the Firstbank Board of Directors and as an FFA Livestock Judge. A Marietta School Board member for several years, he and Jane served as sponsors for many senior trips. In addition, Mr. Brannan was previously active and served as president of the Marietta Lions Club, the Love County Chamber of Commerce, the Rod and Gun Club, and for the past 10 years was an active member of the local AA group. A loyal fan of the University of Oklahoma’s football team, Mr. Brannan also loved to fish, hunt and sing. He was of the Church of Christ faith and often led the congregational singing or the worship services. Most recently he was attending the Lebanon Church of Christ.

Survivors include a son, John C. Brannan Jr. and wife Jaycile of Dallas; daughter, Susie Brown and husband Dan of Dallas; four grandchildren, Samantha Jane Smoot, Dr. John Brannan Smoot and wife, Stacy, William Ryan Brannan and John Claude Brannan III; three great-grandchildren, Erica Smoot, John Brannan Smoot Jr. and Elsie Smoot; sister-in-law, Peggy Autry Stafford of Norman; brother-in-law, David Lee Autry and wife Loretta of Oklahoma City; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; a brother, W.R. “Bill” Brannan on August 18, 2000; and an infant sister.

Pallbearers were David B. Autry, Eddie Autry, Joel Autry, Marcia Pierce, Sara Brannan, Cathy Brannan and Abby Brannan. Honorary pallbearers were Bobby Brannan, Rick Brannan, Linda Stafford Grotte, Claudia Stafford Decker, Fayrond Balch, Linda Graham, Joe Davis and Tom Brannan.
