Interment with military honors were held at Lakeview Cemetery, Marietta.
Services were under the direction of Alexander Funeral Home, Wilson, assisted by the Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home, Marietta.
Born November 12, 1936, at Pike, the son of Samuel Preston and Beulah Mae McKee Bone, he died Sunday, August 24, 2008, with his family at his side in an Oklahoma City hospital following an extended illness. Raised in Western Love County, Mr. Bone attended school at Courtney. He moved to Farmington, New Mexico after school and worked a short while in the oil fields. He then returned to this area, living at Wilson, where he owned and operated a Phillips 66 gas station. There he met and later married the former Betty Joy Johnson June 16, 1961. Shortly after their marriage, Mr. Bone was activated in the U.S. Army during the Berlin Crisis in October 1961.
He served honorably as part of the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1964. After his military service, Mr. Bone returned to Love County, living at Abner delivering propane. He later moved to Marietta where his first job was at Robertson’s Hams. He later worked for the Marietta Public Works Authority as the water superintendent and was also the maintenance supervisor for Falconhead. Mr. Bone retired from the Marietta PWA in 2001 and in his retirement he was self-employed as a plumber and rancher. Mr. Bone always enjoyed working and loved to attend his grandchildren’s ballgames, as well as visiting with his family and many friends. He was a member of Marietta’s First Baptist Church and was a past member of the Marietta Lions Club and the Marietta Breakfast Club.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Betty Joy of the home; two daughters, Joy Dawn Harmon and husband Troy and their two children, Marshall and Ryleigh, and Jana Smith and her three children, Meagan, Jayli and Preston; a sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn and Pete Wright; parents-in-law, Eugene and Oleta Marshall; sisters-in-law, Shirley Stephenson, Linda Morrisey and Geraldine Bone; a brother-in-law, Carlos Johnson and wife, Pam; great-grandchild, Logan Turner; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Gerald Bone; and a sister, Mona Bone.
Pallbearers were “The Regulars,” Cody Gillham, Kyler Gillham, Blake Milor, Cole Stokes, Wesley Elmore, Weston Elmore, Marshall Harmon and Cole Flanagan. Honorary pallbearers were Joe Bell, Bill Bell, Jerry Bone, John Bone, Jim Bone, Marion Bone, Dr. Vergil Smith, Dr. J.T. O’Connor, Randall Colston, Bud Hill, John Kennedy and Vance McGill.
