Services for Virgil W. Barber, 70, of Jackson, Mississippi, were held at 10 a.m., Friday, February 20, at the Thackerville Church, with pastor Johnny Reed and the Rev. David Colaw officiating.
Mr. Barber was born October 14, 1933, in Dallas, the son of LeRoy and Edith Giles Barber. He died Monday, February 16, 2004, in Mercy Memorial Health Center, Ardmore.
Born in Dallas, while his parents were visiting her sister, he was raised in Marietta. Mr. Barber attended school in Marietta until his senior year in high school when he moved to California to live with his mother and graduated from high school in Torrance, California. He and Joyce Stout were married in 1963, in Los Angeles. Some years later, the couple moved to Thackerville, where they raised their children. Mr. Barber retired from the Santa Fe Railroad after 10 years and then worked in the Heat Treatment Department of Weber Aircraft in Gainesville, Texas, retiring in 1992 after 25 years of employment. Mr. and Mrs. Barber moved to Jackson, Mississippi, to make their home in 1996, and he returned to Ardmore in January of this year. He was a member of the Salvation Army Church in Ardmore.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce Barber of the home in Jackson; mother, Florence Barber of Enville; a son and daughter-in-law, Virgil Jr and Kim Barber of Woodbine, Texas; four daughters and sons-in-law, Debra and Jerry Stinson of Overbrook, Brenda and Kevin Voeller of Lansing, Michigan, Dovie Love of Jackson, and Linda Tillis of Alexandria, Virginia; four brothers, Donald Barber of Enville, Andy Barber of Orange, Texas, Clifford Weimer of California and Homer Ivins of Lebanon; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Mr. Barber was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Cheryl Bunting; granddaughter, Jessica Ann Bunting; great-granddaughter, Laura Ann Wilson; and two brothers, Robert Barber and Charles Barber.
Pallbearers were Robert Stinson, Billy Stinson, Erik Kretzschmar, Brad Vernon, Ocie Wilson and Richard Barber. Honorary pallbearers were the rest of Mr. Barber’s grandchildren.
Interment was in Lakeview Cemetery, Marietta, under the direction of Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home, Marietta.
