Graveside services for Syble Lois Askew, 96, of Marietta, were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 16, in Lakeview Cemetery, Marietta, with Jeff McLemore officiating.

Born February 15, 1912, in Marietta, the daughter of Roscoe and Willie Rickets Miller Askew, she died Saturday, September 13, 2008 in Lake Country Nursing Center, Marietta. She graduated from Tishomingo High School in 1930 and then attended Murray School of Agriculture, also in Tishomingo. Miss Askew worked in Civil Service for many years, including assignments at Camp Howze in Gainesville, Texas, Brooke Army Medical Center of Fort Sam Houston, Texas, the Ardmore Air Base and Carswell Air Force Base in Fort Worth, Texas. In addition, she was employed in the Love County Treasurer’s Office for eight years. Upon her retirement from Carswell AFB in 1982, Miss Askew returned to Marietta to make her home. Her hobbies included fishing and all types of crafts, ceramics, knitting, crocheting and various painting techniques.

Survivors include two nieces, Jimmie W. and Joel Hicks of Leon and Joanne and Jim Coble of Marietta; two great-nephews and two great-nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Edna Harley and Arthurrene Clark.

Honorary pallbearers were Joel Hicks, Jim Coble, Chad Coble, Cody Coble, Clayton Christian and Rick Musick.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Love County Military Museum in care of the funeral home, or the charity of one’s choice. Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home
