Carol Wayne Flanagan

Carol Wayne Flanagan of Greenville was born December 31, 1929 in
Marietta, the son of Orvis and Ruby Jane Lawson Flanagan. He married
Alice Jean Hendon on October 25, 1950, with whom he later had two
daughters and three sons. He passed away at the age of 91 on his
mother's birthday, Monday, March 22, 2021, just in time to celebrate
with her and other family and friends in Heaven. He passed away at his
residence with his family surrounding him with love, assistance and
prayer and returning his blessing of music by singing his favorite
gospel hymns to him in person, on the phone and by video. Private family
services with interment were held at the Greenville Cemetery.
Carol Wayne lived his life serving God first, his family second, others
third and himself last. He was a positive and giving man who blessed
others with his time and talents. He taught his children, grandchildren,
and great-grandchildren to have strong work and moral ethics, how to
garden and raise animals, how to drive tractors, how to cut and haul
hay, how to build and be handy, and shared just about everyone he knew
how to worship God in song. He was a tall and strong man with a kind and
generous heart and leaves behind quite a legacy.
He fed his large family well by fishing in the Red River with his
hand-tied hoop nets, growing a garden several acres in size, keeping
several hives of bees, along with raising chickens, hogs, and cattle for
food. Later his garden fed his grandchildren as well and they were
enlisted for digging potatoes, picking corn, snapping green beans,
picking up pecans and gathering eggs among other chores.
He ultimately supported his family by building custom homes and taught
all his children, including sons-in-law, about construction - especially
custom cabinetry and woodwork. When obtaining licensed plumbing and
electrical contractors for building jobs became a challenge to building
schedules, he decided to obtain both contractor's licenses himself, but
not without asking his wife, Alice Jean, who he bragged was smarter than
him, to be his study partner and obtain the licenses herself also which
resulted in her becoming the first licensed female plumbing contractor
in the State of Oklahoma. It was not uncommon during his working years
for their dining table to be covered with blueprints that he and Alice
Jean were hand-drafting for clients.
In addition to giving time to earn a living and nurturing his family,
Carol Wayne led music for decades at Eastside Baptist Church of
Marietta, inspiring others to follow in his footsteps to lead music and
worship along the years. After retiring from building homes, he and
Alice Jean traveled with volunteer Christian building groups to build
churches in various locations in the United States and attended many
gospel music singing events. He also taught himself how to build guitars
and rocking chairs to fit the curvature of an individual's spine.
During Carol Wayne's years leading music at church, he wore a coat and
tie often, but later transitioned to a buttoned-down shirt with overalls
instead of slacks and a sports coat. In his last days, he even insisted
on wearing overalls and said that he was getting stronger and would be
planting a garden soon. He most likely is looking for the perfect spot
in Heaven to grow tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, sweet corn, squash,
zucchini, and potatoes and maybe have some chickens and bees. But it
will be just a little bit before that garden is planted as he has much
catching up to do with loved ones and friends as he was preceded in
death by his parents, Orvis and Ruby Flanagan; great-great-grandchild,
Teagan Prince; son-in-law, "The Late Great" Steven Creecy; and nephew,
Daren Flanagan.
Carol Wayne is survived by his wife, Alice Jean of the home; two
daughters, Carolyn Gordon and husband Larry and Charlotte Creecy; three
sons, Bill Flanagan and wife Reba, David Flanagan and wife Mona, and
Kevin Flanagan and wife Sherry; brother, G.W. Flanagan and wife Erma;
sister, Virginia Bone and husband Johnny; 12 grandchildren, Sarah
Gordon, Rebecca Sullivan and husband Brad, TaShonda Fortune and husband
Greg, Misty McAfee and husband Steve, Raigan Smith and husband Derek,
Cole Flanagan and wife Jessica, Thomas Creecy and wife Katy, Alison
Gurley and husband Travis, Whittiny Barber and husband Nick, Laney
Carroll and husband Jason, Tyler Prince, and Dylan Prince; 23
great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren, along with
nephews and nieces.
Casket bearers were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Eastside
Baptist Church of Marietta.
