Interment will follow in the Dunbar Cemetery.
Mrs. Ward, the fifth child of Lucy and Will Anderson, was born March 7, 1912. She passed away Thursday, May 23, 2013, in Mercy Health Love County, Marietta, at the age of 101.
The Anderson family lived in the part of Love County, west of Marietta, known at “The Prairie”, but later moved to the Dunbar community. Other children in the family at that time were Robert, Clarence, Alex and Nettie Mae, all now deceased. Maudie attended the Prairie School for several years, but as a young girl she left school to work in her aunt’s laundry business. At a very young age she joined St. John Primitive Baptist Church, remaining a member throughout her life. Her first job away from home, which set the course of her life, began as a teenager hired to live with a family in Ardmore to care for their disabled daughter. The family soon moved to San Antonio taking Maudie with them. It was in San Antonio that she met and married Perry Ward, a longshoreman, whose work took them to live in cities all along the Texas Gulf coast. Wherever they lived she worked as a domestic: cooking, cleaning, and helping to raise others’ children. In 1989, living in Houston after her husband had passed away, Maudie decided to return to the Dunbar community to share a home with her beloved “baby” sister, Verda. There she spent many happy days sewing, cooking and gardening. She was well-known for her beautiful red hibiscus flowers growing by the front porch. She and her sister spent many days working in their vegetable garden, where they were most proud of their big watermelons and sweet potatoes. They enjoyed watching TV soap operas together, as well as watching Tiger Woods play golf, and President Barack Obama’s speeches. She very happily received a 100th birthday greeting from the President.
Maudie’s sister, Verda survives her and continues to live in the home they shared for 24 years. Many nieces, nephews, grands and greats cherish the wonderful memories of “Aunt Maudie’s” sweet personality, warm smile, and twinkling eyes. Most important are the memories of a woman whose determined spirit and enjoyment of life were an inspiration to all who knew her.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
