Services for Dortha Jo Adams, 85, of Burneyville were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 24 in the Burneyville Baptist Church with Brother Billy Gunnels officiating.

Interment followed in Burneyville Cemetery.

Born November 3, 1929 in Achille, the daughter of E.L. and Gismonda Mae Bullock Wright, she died Tuesday, January 20, 2015 in Mercy Health Love County, Marietta. A resident of Love County since 1949, Mrs. Adams was a retired school teacher. She and Joe B. Adams were married at Burneyville on September 1, 1950, and he preceded her in death on November 18, 2000. Mrs. Adams stated her teaching career at the age of 19 at Burneyville, then at Turner Schools, retiring in 1988 after 33 years with the school district and after teaching her grandson. Dortha was also a very active member of the Burneyville Baptist Church, teaching Sunday School, serving as director for Vacation Bible School, also youth sponsor and involved with the church’s music program. In addition, she served on the building committee that was instrumental in the construction of the Burneyville Baptist Church. She was a very humble woman and determined prayer warrior who left a legacy of faith. Her life was lived like a pebble thrown in a pond…her influence was like the ripples. In 2006, she was honored by the Spiritual Seekers at the annual conference. Dortha also enjoyed sports. She coached the fifth and sixth grade girls basketball teams and enjoyed several winning seasons. She was always in attendance at her children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events and activities. Dortha was also an avid fan of the Thunder and OU. She was known throughout the County for her delicious pecan pies. However, most of all, Dortha treasured the time spent with family, especially Sunday gatherings in her home.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; father-in-law and mother-in-law, John and Jewel Adams; four brothers, Nelson, Wayne, Mac and Frank Wright and two sisters, Joyce Schmidt and Revonda Pippin.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and Adolfo Ramon and Cindy and Monte Dinwiddie, all of Burneyville; two sisters, Imogene Nelson of Fremont, California and Judy Bolen of Denison, Texas; five grandchildren, Ben Ramon and wife Lindsey, Julie Shankles and husband William, Josh Dinwiddie, Cliff Lawson and Kyle Lawson; five great-grandchildren, Briar Shankles, Journey Shankles, Willow Shankles, Emma Lawson and Jacie Lawson and numerous nieces and nephews.

Serving as pallbearers were Ben Ramon, Josh Dinwiddie, Cliff Lawson, Kyle Lawson, William Shankles, Briar Shankles, Johnny Bolen and Steve Bolen. Honorary bearers were the members of the Ladies Sunday School Class of Burneyville Baptist Church.

The family wishes to express appreciation to all of Dortha’s caregivers over the past several years.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Burneyville Baptist Church, c/o Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home, 100 East Main Street, Marietta, OK 73448.

Contributor Note: I was fortunate to be one of Mrs. Adam’s students at Turner School when I was in the 4th Grade. She was a great and very patient teacher.
