Velma was born April 17, 1933, in Crescent , OK, to Alexander Smith and Marvella Holmes Smith and passed away on Wednesday, May 27, 2009, in Enid, OK.

She attended Pleasant Green Grade School and graduated from Booker T Washington High School in Dover, OK. During her school years, she thrived on playing basketball and played on several championship teams.

Velma was the fifth of 11 children. She grew up on a farm west of Crescent . She enjoyed the comrade of growing up, working and playing in a large family. They worked the fields as a family. Her mother took joy in teaching Velma and her sisters cooking, canning and sewing. Cooking and sewing became lifelong passions for her.

She moved to Enid after finishing school. She held a variety of jobs before finding her true calling, a cook, at Enid State School, where she worked until her retirement. Along the way, she and her husband, James, had a social club they owned for several years, where she made an award-winning barbeque sauce that everyone loved.

In later years, she enjoyed traveling all over the United States with her traveling buddy, Nell, and spoiling her babies, Iesha and Makayah. Velma was a member of the Quill Lodge.

Velma leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter, Marsha "Punkin" Smith; three sisters, Maggie Smith of Enid, OK, Opal Winn of Lawrence, KS, and J. Verdean Smith of Denver, CO; four brothers, Alex (Carrie) Smith of Las Vegas, NV, Roy (Emma) Smith of Denver, CO, Glen Smith of Los Angeles, CA, and William (LaVonna) Smith of Crescent , OK, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends she loved dearly.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her son and three brothers.

Our mother, sister, aunt and friend will be missed and will have a place in our hearts forever.
